Plume IQ – Streaming wins in Japan on big game day

Plume IQ

The world’s very best teams competed at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. However, when it came to the tournament’s final showpiece, one nation topped the streaming league—and it wasn’t France or Argentina!

From an analysis of data from Plume-powered smart homes, Japanese consumers emerged as the most enthusiastic streamers. In Europe and the U.S., there were only marginal increases in streaming device data consumption during the big game on December 18, 2022, of 11% and 28% respectively compared to the previous year’s baseline, suggesting that broadcast television was the most popular viewing medium. However, Japan saw an exponential increase of 109% in streaming device data consumption versus the baseline. Did the country's stellar performance in the tournament pique the nation's interest?

In all territories we saw an increase in smartphone usage, suggesting that people used the small screen to interact with content and communicate with friends during the game.
